Overview
Loss of appetite is characterized by poor appetite despite the physical need for food. It is normal to experience a temporary loss of appetite, however, if it lasts for more than a day or two, it can be a sign of a serious underlying condition such as depression, cancer or eating disorder. It may also result to malnutrition, weight loss, lack of energy and impaired healing.
Symptoms

Appetite related problems:

  • Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by a refusal to eat due to intense fear of putting on weight.

  • Bulimia. People who have bulimia eat an excessive amount of food in a single episode and almost immediately make themselves vomit or use laxatives or diuretics (water pills) to get rid of the food in their bodies.
Risk Factors

Factors that can increase one's chances of losing their appetite for food

  • Infections such as pneumonia, hepatitis, HIV, influenza, pyelonephritis, etc.
  • Cancer of any kind
  • Inflammation in the bowels or gut (pancreatitis, IBS)
  • Psychiatric conditions (depression, schizophrenia)
  • Medications or drugs (alcohol, narcotics, antibiotics, cancer drugs, etc.)
  • Pregnancy, particularly within the 1st trimester
