Overview

Dizziness is a false sensation of movement or spinning. It is often accompanied by a loss of balance or nauseated feeling. It can occur in adults and children, but is more common in children during adolescence.

It can refer to:

  • Vertigo - the sensation of spinning or having one's surroundings spin about them.

  • Pre-syncope - lightheadedness, muscular weakness and feeling faint as opposed to a syncope, which is actually fainting.

  • Disequilibrium - the sensation of being off balance, and is most often characterized by frequent falls in a specific direction.
Symptoms
  • Loss of balance
  • Unsteadiness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Faintness
  • Blurred vision following quick movement
  • Hyperventilation
  • Face appears pale or sometimes greenish (malaise)
  • Increased salivation
Risk Factors
  • Dehydration
  • Excessive exposure to heat
  • Sudden change in blood pressure
  • Anemia
  • Aging
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Drug use or withdrawal
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Inner ear problems
  • Emotional distress
  • Psychological conditions

  • Promptly treat ear infections, colds, flu, sinus congestion, and other respiratory infections.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent getting dehydrated.
  • Avoid going to an environment with sudden change of temperatures.
