Nasal blockage, Nasal obstruction, Stuffy nose

Nasal congestion is the blockage of nasal passageway when tissues and blood vessels become swollen or inflamed on the membrane linings of the nose. It may cause obstruction to the flow of air in nasal passageway (stuffy nose) or may cause nasal discharge or mucus (runny nose).

Symptoms
  • Cough, headache
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Sinus pain or infection
  • Mucus build-up
  • Difficulty in breathing through the nose
  • Drowsiness, lightheadedness

Commonly Prescribed Drugs

Nasal decongestants or alpha-adrenergic agonist drugs (chlorphenamine maleate, naphazoline, phenylephrine HCl, phenylpropanolamine HCl, oxymetazoline) induces vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the nose, reduces swelling and mucus formation.

Precaution: Patients w/ kidney or liver impairment, cardiac disease, glaucoma, diabetes, may impair the ability to operate machinery and driving.

Side effects: Drowsiness, anxiety, irregular blood pressure, stomach discomfort, pale skin, dryness of mouth, nose, throat.

Treatment and Management
Home Remedies
  • Use a humidifier or vaporizer if available, an alternative is using steam from boiling water. Steam helps lessen mucus build-up and helps moisten clogged nasal.

  • Drink lots of water to thin out mucus and help sinuses from being blocked.

  • Use a warm compress on the face to relieve discomfort and open nasal passageway.

Lifestyle modifications

  • Elevate head by lying on a stack of pillows to make breathing more comfortable.

  • Avoid chlorinated pools as it may irritate the mucous membrane in nasal passageway.
