Nasal congestion is the blockage of nasal passageway when tissues and blood vessels become swollen or inflamed on the membrane linings of the nose. It may cause obstruction to the flow of air in nasal passageway (stuffy nose) or may cause nasal discharge or mucus (runny nose).
Commonly Prescribed Drugs
Nasal decongestants or alpha-adrenergic agonist drugs (chlorphenamine maleate, naphazoline, phenylephrine HCl, phenylpropanolamine HCl, oxymetazoline) induces vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the nose, reduces swelling and mucus formation.
Precaution: Patients w/ kidney or liver impairment, cardiac disease, glaucoma, diabetes, may impair the ability to operate machinery and driving.
Side effects: Drowsiness, anxiety, irregular blood pressure, stomach discomfort, pale skin, dryness of mouth, nose, throat.
