Common Name/Other Name: Exhaustion, Tiredness, Lethargy, Listlessness

Fatigue is a physical or mental state of feeling tired or being weak. It is a common and long-term condition that may lead to medical problems. Physical fatigue or lack of strength happens when the whole body cannot function at normal levels of a persons' usual ability (e.g. unable to carry or lift heavy things or difficulty in climbing up or down the stairs). Mental or psychological fatigue is the feeling of sleepiness and inability to focus or concentrate.

Symptoms
  • Exhaustion after a physical or mental activity
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Feeling light-headed or dizzy
  • Muscle aches
  • Low energy (low motivation) or lack of strength
  • Impaired hand to eye coordination (slow reflexes)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mood changes
Risk Factors
  • Medical causes or underlying illness (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disorder, blood-related disorder)
  • Lifestyle related causes such as poor sleeping habits, unhealthy living, poor diet, overwork or strenuous exercise.
  • Emotional concerns such as depression and grief, feeling irritated, lack of motivation, and stress.
  • Overweight or obese and underweight.
Commonly Prescribed Drugs
  • There are no specific medications for fatigue. Since there are many factors that trigger fatigue, determining the underlying cause can be the key to treating the symptoms of fatigue (e.g. if the cause of fatigue is due to anemia or loss of blood, iron supplements are may be given to treat anemia).
  • Vitamins and minerals are given to fight fatigue by boosting the body's immune system.
Treatment and Management
  • Get 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep every day.
  • Regular exercise (e.g. yoga, stretching) can help release stress and relax the body.
  • Eat a balanced diet (which includes carbohydrates, protein and nutrients from fruits and vegetables). If overweight, avoid eating meals more than 3 times a day. If underweight, eat complete meals and avoid skipping meals.
