Common name: Pagka-baog (Fil)

Infertility is defined as the failure to conceive or become pregnant in a span of 6 months to 1 year of unprotected sex that is due to different factors caused by men and women or both.

 

Symptoms

Causes for Men:

  • Poor sperm quality / sperm counts
  • Varicocele or Enlargement of the veins on the testicles.
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STDs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhea.
  • Hypogonadism
  • Tumors
  • Chromosome defects
  • Medications e.g Steroids, sulfasalazine

Causes for Women:

  • Ovulation dysfunction
    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
    • Premature Ovarian insufficiency (Early menopause)
    • Hormonal problems
  • Damaged fallopian tube
    • Pelvic inflammatory disease STDs: Chlamydia, gonorrhea
    • Surgery in the abdomen or pelvis
  • Endometriosis
  • Cervical/uterine disorders
    • Inborn disorders
    • Benign tumors

Cancer treatment, certain medications and social habits (smoking, alcohol, illicit drug use) can also cause infertility. Other factors to consider include: Age, weight (obese), stress, occupational exposure.

Treatment and Management

Management for Female

  • Fertility Drugs
  • Clomiphene citrate stimulate the release of the hormones FSH and LH
  • Gonadotropins directly stimulates the ovary
  • Metformin, clomiphene for women with PCOS

Management for Male

  • Surgery for treating varicocele
  • Assisted reproductive technology (ART) Obtaining sperm through normal injection or surgical extraction, then introduced in the female genital tract by the following methods.
    • In-vitro fertilization
    • Intrauterine insemination
    • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection

Other management options:

  • Quit smoking and illicit drug use, avoid alcohol.
