Defense Against Aging

"How to slow down the effects of aging naturally"
By: Karen Lee Alabado, MDDefense Against Aging

The first defense against aging is to avoid ultraviolet exposure. That means you are wise not to go outdoors between 10am-4pm. Use an umbrella or wear a hat if you must venture out. Besides those precautions, you can apply the right broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Broad spectrum sunblock should be able to protect you from both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays. Remember that sunlight, which is visible light, is not the same as ultraviolet light, which penetrates the skin and passes through cloud cover.

Avoidance, however, is not the only solution. Ultraviolet rays can create harmful oxygen radicals, which damage the skin. To combat these radicals, the body needs antioxidants—found in food, as well as in topical skin creams. For the latter, ask your dermatologist. Meantime, here’s a list of antioxidant vitamins you should look for in beauty products to help you fight aging naturally:

● Vitamin A has a topical version in the form of retinoids, which help combat any damage done to the skin. Retinoids can also help prevent the appearance of fine lines, even out the skin, and lighten spots.

●  Vitamin C applied to the face every morning can counter the effects of free radicals on the skin.

● Vitamin E is usually partnered with Vitamin C as a topical antioxidant.

● Reservatrol is derived from grapes and can protect the skin from UV damage.

● Ferrulic acid from rice bran and tomatoes is able to absorb UV radiation.

● Green tea has EGCG which is a potent antioxidant.

● Coffee berry from Arabica extract is able to reverse damage on skin cells.
