Going Green with your Beauty Routine

By: Adrielle AustriaGoing Green with your Beauty Routine

The key to great skin is not always found in the beauty sections of malls and drug stores, it may be in your kitchen, too!

Have you ever watched a K-drama and wondered why Korean women have such poreless, dewy complexions? Their skin is so luminous, it’s as if they are lit from within. If you are a makeup enthusiast who follows makeup trends religiously, you will find that Koreans prefer light makeup. Unlike their western counterparts whose makeup routine consists of a myriad of “beauty weapons”, Korean women only use a handful of products. They can even afford to skip foundation and concealer.

But what really sets Korean beauty routine apart from the rest of the world? Their beauty routine is motivated by prevention. While we are focused on covering up, they are dedicated to being proactive, instead of reactive, in addressing skin issues and concerns. They aim to achieve a skin so perfect that they can apply limited or no makeup at all.

The other secret is that their skin care products are made up of organic ingredients. An average person slathers, lathers, sprays or rubs different products on their body every day but what we are not mindful of the fact that our skin is like a sponge that absorbs all the chemicals we expose it to. While cosmetic companies and Food and Drug Administration maintain that these ingredients are safe (as long as you are not allergic), these amounts can add up and reactions to it can develop over time.

What is organic skin care?

Organic or natural skin care uses plant-derived and other naturally occurring ingredients. These ingredients are “green”, meaning, they are grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, and so on. These ingredients are maintained with little to no additives.

Why go the organic route?

The primary advantage of using organic or natural products is that they enhance the skin’s natural function. The natural ingredients in these products work in synergy with the skin to help optimize skin regeneration. We often forget to keep in mind that what goes on our skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream and is carried throughout the body.

Majority of commercially-produced beauty products are made up of preservatives, stabilizers, artificial colors and fragrances that seep through the pores that may cause a range of negative and potentially long-term health effects.

Make over your beauty routine

Skin care products with natural components are available now more than ever. Aside from beautifying purposes, they also have other benefits such as providing antioxidant nourishment, stimulating your immune system and adding to your skin’s UV resistance.

Want to start going green for your skin but don’t know where to start? Here are some of the best ingredients you should start looking for in your products:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has a kaleidoscope of benefits is no secret. It is extremely versatile as it is inexpensive. Skin problems can stem from intestinal problems. ACV helps by ridding your guts of pathogens like bacteria, eventually cleansing the skin and helping to stop acne.

ACV’s acetic acid and minerals such as magnesium and potassium help detoxify the body and boost liver function and balance bacteria in your stomach. Now that is being beautiful inside and out!

  • Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree is used to fight acne breakouts, redness and inflammation on the skin. Aside from its anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree is an anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal as well. Those who are sensitive to the usual acne treatments may tolerate tea tree oil better because it has few to no side effects when combined with a carrier oil. It is also part of the best home remedies for acne.

  • Honey

Like apple cider vinegar, honey also offers a variety of benefits for the body. It is a natural source of nutrients, vitamins, and skin-boosting acids. These compounds are beneficial in reducing breakouts, promoting wound healing, fighting allergies or rashes, helping reduce acne scars and providing moisture to the skin. It is also suitable as a dressing for wounds and burns. You may also find that it is often included in treatments for dandruff, diaper rashes, psoriasis, bacterial infection and so much more.

Facial cleansers and other skin care products also incorporate honey into their ingredients because it is suitable even for sensitive skin. So many sweet benefits don’t you think?

  • Coconut oil

Coconut oil is also one of the most versatile ingredients there is. Its skin care benefits include removing of dead skin cells, protecting against sunburns and strengthening the underlying epidermal tissue.

You can use it both on your skin and hair as a moisturizer and makeup remover. Coconut oil used internally can also help nourish your gut and increase immune function with its high amount of healthy fats.

  • Sea salt

Sea salt (mainly Himalayan or Celtic) is often used in scrubs, facial masks, and toners along with other skin-boosting ingredients. It is loaded with minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium which help protect, balance and restore the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which makes it great for soothing the skin and calming breakouts, balancing oil production and removing of dead skin cells.

  • Aloe vera

Not only is aloe vera good for the hair, it does wonders for your skin, too! The gel on its leaves is an effective remedy for burns, psoriasis and cold sores. A research has found that using aloe vera can also delay skin aging. A study showed that topical application of aloe vera resulted in an increase of collagen production which helped improve skin elasticity.

Using organic or natural ingredients can be effective in addressing your skin issues but we must always keep in mind that what goes inside our bodies also play an enormous role in what we see on the outside. Just like achieving a sexier body, having a great skin won’t happen overnight. So aside from your arsenal of beauty products, try going to bed earlier, having a healthier diet, exercising more and drinking more water. Not only will you be fitter and healthier, you’ll be waking up to a beautiful, glowing skin in no time.
