Essential Oils for Aging Skin

Essential oils are “essential” in the sense that it contains the “essence” of the plant material. These oils are extracted from different parts of the plant including the leaves, flowers, bark, roots, and peels through a distillation process. They have been used for thousands of years for their medicinal and health purposes. Its uses can range from natural medicine, household cleaning products to aromatherapy and beauty care. Its benefits stem from their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, properties.

Since most commercial products attribute their age-defying benefits to essential oils, why not try pure essential oils—minus all the toxic chemicals? Here are best anti-aging oils for beautiful skin:

  • Apricot Kernel Oil. Apricot kernel oil is a great natural moisturizer because of its rich omega-6-gamma linolenic acid content while its vitamins A and E aids in the regeneration of skin cells and stimulates collagen production thereby reducing wrinkles and other fine lines on the skin.
  • Argan Oil. Argan oil already has a good reputation as an essential oil due to its variety of uses. It is used to make skin more supple and smoother which can be attributed to the fatty acids helping in skin hydration, wrinkle reduction and restoring the skin’s elasticity.
  • Avocado Oil. Not only is avocado a yummy treat but it is packed with sterolin, a powerful collagen booster. It also contains lecithin and potassium that helps strengthen the skin, and also includes skin friendly vitamins A and E.
  • Carrot Seed Oil. Nothing can age your skin faster than harmful UV rays from too much sun exposure. If you are always out and about then carrot seed oil be fit for you. It is packed with carotenoids which increase your skin’s susceptibility against UV rays.
  • Coconut Oil. Benefits of virgin coconut oil are undisputed. It is a rich source of the antioxidant vitamin E which makes it an excellent carrier oil for anti-aging serums. Not only can it reduce signs of aging, it also strengthens the skin against cellulite and stretch mark. Aside from these benefits, coconut oil is also a natural sunscreen and prevents sunburn.  
  • Frankincense Essential Oil. Frankincense oil is used in regenerating skin cells. Users report scars, fine lines, and wrinkle reduction. It also tightens sagging skin, evens skin tone and balances the pH level of the skin.
  • Geranium Oil. Often used for aromatherapy, geranium oil is also relevant to the skin care industry because of its excellent anti-inflammatory properties. It can take years off your face by lightening age spots and evening out your skin tone.
  • Jojoba Oil. Pronounced as “hohoba”, this oil closely resembles sebum, a natural product produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin which makes it a good moisturizer which leaves the skin soft and smooth.
  • Olive Oil. Make olive oil a staple not only in your kitchen but in your skin care arsenal as well! It is packed with anti-aging properties to help slow the process of aging. Vitamin E accounts for most of olive oil’s anti-aging benefits which help in restoring the skin’s smoothness and protecting against ultraviolet light.
  • Pomegranate Seed Oil. You may often find pomegranate seed oil in anti-aging creams for a good reason. It has regenerative properties which can erase visible signs of skin aging. It also contains potent antioxidants—punicic and ellagic acids that help stimulate collagen production and enhance skin elasticity for a firmer, healthier skin. 
  • Rosehip Seed Oil. An application of rosehip seed oil gives your skin a healthy dose of vitamin A or All-Trans Retinoic Acid (ATRA) which can significantly reduce age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles by boosting collagen production. It is also rich in essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 linolenic acid that is known to improve elasticity, texture and overall appearance of the skin.
  • Sweet Almond Oil. Like carrot seed and coconut oil, sweet almond oil is also a natural UV blocker. It is also packed with vitamins K and E which not only enhances the elasticity of the skin and promotes regeneration of new cells, it increases blood circulation as well.

Instead of splurging on expensive skin care products, why not feed your skin with good things Mother Nature has to offer? These oils can work alone or can be mixed with one another for added benefits. Here is a quick guide on how to blend oils:

Essential oils are generally safe but some are toxic and fatal if taken orally. Do a patch test before using the product on your face. To do the skin test, apply a couple of drops of oil on a band aid and keep the bandage on the inside of the forearm. Remove the band aid after 48 hours and check for irritation.

Extensive research must be done to know what type of oil is best for your skin concern. Do not be afraid to use essential oils that use them with caution especially if you have a pre-existing condition such as heart problems or asthma. If you have these conditions, it is best to consult a physician before using essential oils.
