"Listening to your Favorite Songs Has Benefits, too."
By: Claire Y ContrerasHow Music Affect your Health

Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. Music can be a source of our energy, focus and mood. Scientific studies have shown that music can affect our physical, mental and emotional health.

Music affects physical health. Music reduces the feeling of fatigue, increases levels of psychological arousal, gives out relaxation response and improves motor concentration and coordination. Choosing music that motivates and energizes us will make it easier to start moving. Joggers listen to up-beat songs that match the tempo of their running/jogging rhythm, thus enable them to go further. In beauty spas, they play slow and calming music to help customers relax their bodies and lessen some stress while getting pampered. Music also minimizes certain health conditions.

According to the American Society of Hypertension, listening to relaxing (classical) music everyday for 30 minutes can reduce high blood pressure. Listening to up-beat songs can help eliminate exercise-induced fatigue and fatigue caused by monotonous work. Researchers show that loud and fast music can make heart and breathing rates fast, while listening to slow music slows heart and breathing rates; heart and breathing rates are normal when music stopped. No wonder that when watching live concerts, your adrenaline increases and your heart beats faster.

Music affects mental health. Music enhances intelligence, improves memory performance and concentration. Toddlers are able to speak, learn and remember words as they sing along to nursery rhymes, songs with a catchy beat and watching educational TV shows. As they sing along to the lyrics, their memory and concentration are enhanced. Music can also improve focus and productivity. Relaxing music reduces sympathetic nervous system, decrease anxiety and sleep problems.

Music affects emotional health. Music reflects the feelings of a person. It also either amplify or console the feelings, like when a person is angry, listening to rock or heavy metal music enables him to let loose and go wild; or listening to calming songs or his favorite songs can lower his grudge and forget what happened. It’s been said that music can heal the soul, it aids in stress relief activities, reduces negative emotions and helps fight the blues.

Music is everywhere and has become a part of our lives and can really affects our well-being.
