What Causes Knee Pain?

"Understanding knee pain in middle age"
By: Vanessa ValenzuelaWhat Causes Knee Pain?

Did you know that carrying 10 pounds of excess weight adds 30-60 pounds of extra force on your knees? Your knees carry your whole body weight around and absorb all the impact from walking, running, and jumping.

What are the factors that cause knee pain among people in their 40s and up? How can the pain be addressed? The knee is the body’s largest joint. It provides flexibility and stability. The problem that causes pain is that the knees have to contend with gravity in every single step. Knees are like a pair of rubber slippers that have been subjected to everyday use for several years—they also deteriorate with wear and tear.

If you have been active in sports or if you have been doing a lot of lifting, climbing, squatting, or kneeling, you have an increased risk of developing knee problems. Thus, suffering knee pain is part and parcel of aging. That’s because, by middle age, the knees start showing the effects of gravity and the physical demands of day-to-day living.

Apart from aging, being overweight is also a leading factor that increases your propensity of developing knee problems. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control CDC, obesity increases the risk of developing crippling knee diseases such as osteoarthritis by four times.
