3 S for Success

"Attitudes to improve resilience in your career"
By: Josie O. Santamaria, psychologist and Certified Life Coach3 S for Success

If you are satisfied and happy with your work because you are in the right career, have you given thought to how long this will last? The media gives us news of corporate closures, buy-outs, acquisitions, mergers, and downsizing. How sure are you that your career will not be cut short or that you will not be forced to move to a different career path, accept a different role, and perform functions not to your liking?

Whatever happens, you can be sure to grow resilient when you have a good work habits. But above these work habits, there are 3 S’s that help you succeed: self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-affirmation.

Build and strengthen your self-confidence by focusing on your strengths, your achievements, and what you have benefited from your failures. Dismiss from your mind memories of failure or negative experience. Turn them over to God to heal and forget them. Accept your weaknesses and work on them to improve yourself. Take care of yourself physically: look good and feel good everyday.

Self-discipline is also very important to develop and master these habits. Once you decide to develop a habit, like punctuality in reporting for work, get up immediately as soon as your alarm rings. Continue to do it despite temptations to delay and postpone because you still feel sleepy or lazy. When you arrive at work before 8:00 am give yourself a pat on the back as you say to yourself, “I did it! Thanks be to God!”

Repeat this self-affirmation as you experience a sense of pride and achievement. This is intrinsic reinforcement. Repeat the process everyday. Psychologists tell us that an action repeated 21 times becomes a habit and resists change. Have confidence in God and rely on His grace to sustain your efforts to repeat the good behaviors until they become habits. Thank God for your success each day as you develop these positive habits.
