"Health Benefits from the Coconut"
By: Maria Paula TolentinoThe Tree of Life

When it comes to healthy beverages, there is a drink that is second best to water and can only be found in one fruit: coconut. Coming from the palm family, the Cocos nucifera has been proven useful for a variety of personal, home, and medicinal purposes.

According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut is a highly nutritious “functional food” that is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It provides many health benefits beyond its nutritional content and is said to possess healing properties. The coconut palm is so highly treasured both as a source of food and medicine that it is called “The Tree of Life.”

People from many diverse cultures, languages, religions, and races scattered around the globe have revered the coconut as a valuable source of both food and medicine. Wherever the coconut palm grows, the people have learned of its importance as an effective medicine. In local folk medicine, coconut products have held a respectable and valuable place.

Only a few people (even doctors) understand the importance of coconut in stabilizing blood sugar, lowering cholesterol, healing, hydrating, and even replacing blood plasma in an emergency. Referred to as kalpavriksha (Sanskrit for “the tree that supplies all that is needed to live”) in ancient India, the coconut palm has been recognized as a top immune booster, antifungal, antibiotic, antiviral, and antibacterial remedy for thousands of years all over the world.

The Coconut Research Center adds that in traditional medicine, coconut is reportedly used to treat a wide variety of health problems, including: abscesses, asthma, baldness, bronchitis, bruises, burns, colds, constipation, cough, dropsy, dysentery, earache, fever, flu, gingivitis, gonorrhea, irregular or painful menstruation, jaundice, kidney stones, lice, malnutrition, nausea, rash, scabies, scurvy, skin infections, sore throat, swelling, syphilis, toothache, tuberculosis, tumors, typhoid, ulcers, upset stomach, weakness, and wounds.

The Coconut Research Center enumerates the many medicinal benefits of coconut.

1.     If applied topically, coconut oil helps ward off infection.

2.     If digested, coconut meat and juice help boost energy and endurance, thus enhancing physical and athletic performance.

3.     Drinking coconut juice helps dissolve kidney stones and prevent liver disease.

4.     Coconut does not form harmful byproducts when heated to normal cooking temperature unlike other vegetable oils.

7.     The coconut oil helps control dandruff.
