Types of Yoga, Part 1

"Hatha, Vinyasa, and Restorative"
By: Vanessa ValenzuelaTypes of Yoga, Part 1

There are many different yoga styles being taught and practiced today. Though all of them are based on the same basic physical postures or poses, each of them has a particular emphasis or variation that makes it unique. Here are some of the most popular styles of yoga:

Hatha Yoga. Hatha yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in the world. It is originally a term used to describe the physical part of the yoga lifestyle, in general, which refers to the series of asanas (poses) performed while controlling your breathing. There are actually many types and offshoot styles of hatha yoga, but if you enroll in a yoga class that uses the term “hatha,” expect gentle and slow-paced movements and postures, which make it the recommended style for beginners.

Vinyasa Yoga. Vinyasa , which means “breath-synchronized” movement, is a more vigorous type of yoga that combines flowing postures and rhythmic breathing to come up with an intense workout for both the mind and the body. This active form of yoga is based on the performance of a series of poses called “Sun Salutations” in which movements are matched with the breath. If you’re attending a Vinyasa class, your session most likely starts with a number of Sun Salutations that serve as your warm up for more intense stretching  towards the end.

Restorative Yoga. Restorative yoga allows full relaxation of the body by holding simple poses passively for extended periods of time. Props such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks are utilized for added support so that one can hold the designated asanas longer. By performing these poses longer, you are “opening up” your body and increasing flexibility.
